2018 Central Otago Pinot Noir
Medium dark purple with clear hues. Fragrant blackberry and raspberry with hints of liquorice, black pepper and clove. Sweet red plum, cherry and spice. Richly textured with lovely minerality. Complex with a long and silky sweet berry finish.
2016 Earth Smoke Pinot Noir
Saturated, opaque ruby/garnet.
Fascinatingly, astonishingly, unlike its sibling, the Angel Flower, given proximity and wine-making and –growing equalities: pungent soil tones, tobacco/bark and fresh-turned earth, also with dried herbs: bay, lavender, Mexican oregano, even. The fruit spectrum is blue and black. Really sings soil, stratum.
Great weight and texture, dense but mouth-coating, with brighter fruit flavours than the nose might suggest: blueberry, blackberry, sloe. Salinity, from significant active lime in the soil, waters the mouth, extending an already obdurate length. Whereas, with vine age, the Angel Flower is adding content to its early charm, the Earth Smoke seems to be marrying fruit succulence to its established, adamantine, soil-sponsored clout.

2016 Angel Flower Pinot Noir
Dense, sustained ruby/garnet.
Dizzyingly aromatic, swells from the glass: indurate spice – clove, cumin, caraway, cassia; ripe and bright red fruit – raspberry, redcurrant, Morello cherry. Quite a head-spinning, aromatic ride.
Penetrating, juicy, sappy, brisk yet enveloping; vibrant flavours of red fruit and spice; also a lively earthy component that is relatively new to this vineyard, arriving in recent vintages: born of vine age and a deeper root structure, no doubt. One could hardly ask for a more invigorating, seductive, and briskly legitimate example of this wine.

2016 Marlborough Riesling
Brilliant, pale straw gold.
Lifted, honeyed, with sweet florals: acacia, crocus, pear blossom; lush, but in a fresh and pretty way; not the opulence of summer, but rather the comely profusion of spring; also a mineral character, clean water flowing over stone, characteristic of this vineyard.
Bright and poised, still charm and that floral sweetness, yet with salient phenolics; flirtatious length and a delectable finish. After the adamant and powerful 2015, this is all fluttering lashes, blushes and smiles; a fresh and articulate representation of a balanced and breezy vintage.
