All Pyramid Valley estate and grower vineyards, and our Waikari winery, are certified under New Zealand’s Sustainable Winegrowing Program (SWNZ). However, we set ourselves higher benchmarks.
All vineyards that supply the Pyramid Valley wines are organically certified or in transition, and our Waikari and Low Burn vineyards are BioGro certified organic and grown biodynamically. A bespoke program of regenerative viticulture we call Regenics® is an overriding philosophy across all our estate vineyards.
This outcome-based, multi-faceted program is focused on unleashing the power of the soil and the entire vineyard environment to provide a more resilient ecosystem. Farming intelligent cover crops as well as vines has created real, measurable benefits. Increased organic matter sequestering more carbon and retaining more moisture for the vine has, in some cases, almost eliminated the need for irrigation. Using aerial drones for disease control has significantly reduced sulphur requirements, soil compaction and fossil fuel use, and has improved the wellbeing of our people in the vineyard. Bio-pods, a combination of native and exotic plants, provide havens for beneficial flora and fauna and connect to the vineyard through soil biology. Vine health, wine quality and typicité have all improved out of sight.
This unique program is evolutionary, rather than prescriptive or controlling, guided only by the requirement that all actions must improve vine resilience, ecological health and wine typicité; improve conditions for our people; and leave no negative imprint or residue in the ecosystem or wine. We have reduced bottle weight and are always exploring more environmentally conscious closures and packaging.
Regenics® will continue to evolve. Our future sustainability initiatives will focus on the power of non-vineyard land to sequester carbon and create a modern, healthy ecosystem, reducing fossil fuel use, and ensuring our supply chain efficiency provides additional benefits.
