Immediately engaging,: crushed berry, smoke, and a compelling cured meat/ fresh leather note; also a spicy, bright, dried herb character, like Indian bay or curry leaf.
Fresh, full, firm, with succulent berry fruit, but implosive structure. Neither vague nor sweet. Long, staunch finish, with alternating tranches of fruit, spice, and tannin. Something soothing but stalwart here, surprising in a year elsewhere prone to superficiality or glibness: testimony to talented growers working a gifted site.
2015 Howell Hawke's Bay Cabernet Franc
Deep, luminous, very dark ruby.
Toasted spices – cinnamon, cumin, coriander seed – and fresh raspberry coulis; also a note of balsam. Lifted and already expressive.
Almost North African in its flavour profile: pomegranate, copious spice, black olive, dried orange peel. Less richly fruity than previous vintages, presenting a fine, complex touch. This will be fascinating to match with food, given its elegant, multifaceted nature.
2017 Smokin' Angel Rosé - Limited Edition Magnum
This Limited Edition Rosé 1.5L, is the only wine produced in 2017 from the Pyramid Valley Waikari Estate.
A very special offering, Smokin' Angel is the final wine made by Mike & Claudia as owners of Pyramid Valley. This vintage they decided the quality was not there to produce the Botanical Vineyard Pinot Noirs so they made a Rosé - 100% Pinot Noir from equal parts Earth Smoke and Angel Flower blocks. The label is painted by Claudia and is titled ‘Astral meets Terrestrial’, referencing the influence of the Angel Flower and Earth Smoke blocks.
